A CAB DRIVER was the victim of a savage attack in the early hours of Sunday morning, when he was stabbed in the eye with a pint glass and beaten with his own taxi plate.

The driver, who is in his mid30s and a resident of County Dublin, picked up three men at Strand Road at around 3 a.m. on Sunday morning.

He brought the trio to Wolfe Tone Square West where one of the men stuck a pint glass in to his eye. Gardaí said that the man received serious injuries to his face .

The small group of attackers then took the taxi plate off the top of the car and started hitting the driver with it before the Dublin man ran for his life and the three men also fled the scene.

The injured man was taken to hospital, where he is still recovering from eye and face injuries. ‘We would like to appeal to anyone who may have been in the Wolfe Tone area at around 3.15 late Saturday night, early Sunday morning,’ said Detective Inspector Frank Keenaghan. ‘Someone may have seen the incident or they may have seen the men getting the taxi on Strand Road.’

He said that the car involved was a blue Toyota Prius taxi. ‘Any information received will be treated in the strictest of confidence,’ said Det. Insp. Keenaghan. ‘We obviously want to get to the bottom of this very quickly. We would like to identify these people as soon as possible.’ Bray Garda Station can be contacted on 01 6665300.
