CLARK GRISWALD has proven to be something of an inspiration to plenty of Bray families who have put as much effort in to decorating the outside of their homes as the inside.
From Little Bray to the Boghall and everywhere in between, the town is littered with amazing displays, some of which have been increased with every passing year.
If Santa is not seen climbing up the walls, there is bound to be a giant snowman in the garden or a reindeer somewhere in front of a flashing neon sleigh!
‘We are very proud of him,’ said Susan Corcoran from Beach Road, who’s dad Maurice has been creating a veritable Santa’s grotto of lights for the last number of years, keeping the spirit of Christmas lights alive as his children grow up.
Susan and her siblings help him out as Maurice was diagnosed with narcolepsy over a year ago, a condition he and the family are learning to cope with.
Maurice’s wife Pam takes on the task of doing the inside of the house, and he does the exterior. They also have a different theme for the porch every year. Last year it was toys, while this year it is a miniature village.
There is a sleigh on the roof of Maurice’s house, and more lights than the ESB would care to count! ‘Cars do slow down as they pass,’ said Susan, who said that the whole process really adds to the excitement of Christmas for the whole family as well as friends and neighbours.
John Tobin is another local man who puts on quite a display. The Tobin family lives on O’Byrne Road and John’s wife Jacqueline is the driving force behind the tradition. ‘We’re doing it about 10 years and add a little more each year,’ she said. ‘The grandchildren absolutely love it.’
One thing is for sure, the elaborate displays of lights certainly add a touch of festive cheer to the town!
