Big Belly bins use sun­light to gob­ble up rub­bish

BRAY IS now just the third lo­ca­tion in the coun­try to have so­lar waste bins in­stalled.

Fol­low­ing in the foot­steps of Leitrim and Trin­ity Col­lege and af­ter months of push­ing by Green Party Mem­ber, Coun­cil­lor Caro­line Bur­rell, Bray Town Coun­cil have taken two so­lar bins on trial in the town.

The in­no­va­tive pieces of equip­ment have the abil­ity to trans­form waste col­lec­tion and con­trol Health and Safety is­sues re­gard­ing waste and lit­ter in the area and are lo­cated on the Main Street.

‘ The Big Belly So­lar Bin,’ as it is more fondly known, com­pacts the waste and can hold up to a mas­sive six times the nor­mal street bin of it’s size, lend­ing it­self to less fre­quent emp­ty­ing.

This will not only re­duce costs for Bray Town Coun­cil but it will also re­duce their car­bon foot­print.

‘ Even though they are so­lar pow­ered they still work in cloudy weather which is good news for us,’ ex­plained Cllr. Bur­rell,
