An­i­mal ser­vices to re­ceive €66,000 fund­ing in­jec­tion

A TO­TAL of € 66,000 will be di­vided out be­tween six dif­fer­ent Wick­low or­gan­i­sa­tions de­liv­er­ing var­i­ous an­i­mal care and wel­fare ser­vices.

The Min­is­ter for Agri­cul­ture, Fisheries and Food, Mr Bren­dan Smith T.D. an­nounced on Tues­day that fund­ing to­tally € 1.25 mil­lion would be al­lo­cated to 110 or­gan­i­sa­tions na­tion­wide.

This is the largest ever con­tri­bu­tion since the Depart­ment started mak­ing the ex- gra­tia pay­ments back in 1995. Min­is­ter Smith also warned peo­ple that a pet is for life and not just for Christ­mas.

Wick­low SPCA will re­ceive € 25,000, the Ir­ish Horse Wel­fare Trust €20,000, Ash an­i­mal sanc­tu­ary € 12,000, the Ir­ish Horse Pro­tec­tion League € 5,000, Trav­eller An­i­mal Wel­fare € 3,000 and the Mon­key Sanc­tu­ary Ire­land Ltd. € 1,000.

Min­is­ter Smith re­marked, ‘ it of­ten falls to the wel­fare or­gan­i­sa­tions to deal with the emer­gency sit­u­a­tions aris­ing from aban­doned an­i­mals and we are for­tu­nate in Ire­land to have the ISPCA and the other vol­un­tary or­gan­i­sa­tions with their many ded­i­cated mem­bers who work tire­lessly through­out the coun­try in the in­ter­ests of an­i­mal wel­fare.’

He added that progress was be­ing made with the new An­i­mal Health and Wel­fare Bill.
