The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr Brendan Smith T.D. announced on Tuesday that funding totally € 1.25 million would be allocated to 110 organisations nationwide.
This is the largest ever contribution since the Department started making the ex- gratia payments back in 1995. Minister Smith also warned people that a pet is for life and not just for Christmas.
Wicklow SPCA will receive € 25,000, the Irish Horse Welfare Trust €20,000, Ash animal sanctuary € 12,000, the Irish Horse Protection League € 5,000, Traveller Animal Welfare € 3,000 and the Monkey Sanctuary Ireland Ltd. € 1,000.
Minister Smith remarked, ‘ it often falls to the welfare organisations to deal with the emergency situations arising from abandoned animals and we are fortunate in Ireland to have the ISPCA and the other voluntary organisations with their many dedicated members who work tirelessly throughout the country in the interests of animal welfare.’
He added that progress was being made with the new Animal Health and Welfare Bill.
