Shelton Abbey escape rumours are dismissed
RUMOURS OF a number of escapes from Shelton Abbey have been rebuffed by the Irish Prison Service which says that any prisoners who left the prison during the Christmas period received permission to do so.
According to a spokesperson at the Irish Prison Service, a total of 18 inmates were granted temporary release this year ranging from periods of a few hours to up to a week.
Speaking to the Wicklow People this week the spokesperson added that to date all prisoners have returned on time and that others are due to return in the coming days.
‘The prisoners being released are nearing the end of their sentences and the overriding concern when considering the applications was the safety of the public. All releases are subject to stringent conditions which in the vast majority of cases includes a requirement to report to his/her local garda station,’ said the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr. Dermot Ahern.
