DEVASTATED residents and staff at the Orchard Nursing Home in Bray are in shock after being told it is to close within the month with the management likely to bulldoze the building which has been declared a fire risk.

Workers received the news from HSE officials in a meeting attended by SIPTU after a health safety assessment indicated that residents and staff must be moved elsewhere.

‘Could it not be done up? A lot of the staff members are very upset,’ said an employee, ‘we are also very concerned about the possible trauma to residents.’

Family members are currently being consulted by the HSE, which said it will provide alternative accommodation for the residents.

‘Why was nothing done sooner to prevent this? Why did the condition of the building get to this stage?’ asked Bray woman Sue Meehan, whose grandmother lives in The Orchard.
