PEOPLE in North Wicklow are more inclined to drink and drive than those in South Wicklow.

Superintendant Mick Lernihan said that year on year there were 30 per cent more drink drivers caught in North Wicklow than in South Wicklow.

Last year 57 drink drivers were caught in the Greystones area, up from 41 in 2007. These were alarming figures according to Superintendant Lernihan who said that it showed the number of people still willing to drink and drive.

However he said that the detection rate in North Wicklow may be that bit higher as Bray had established a dedicated traffic corps since last June who dealt specifically with drink driving and other road traffic matters.

He said that as a result of the new traffic corps detection rates had increased significantly.

After questioning from Cllr. Margaret O’Callaghan Superintendant Lernihan said that predominately the 40-60 age bracket were the worst offenders.
