Man in trouble after giving Gardaí ‘the finger’
A MAN who stuck up his middle finger at Gardai and shouted obscenities at them was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment at last week’s sitting of Wicklow District Court.
Vincent Nugent, 96 Mountain View, Ballyguile, Wicklow was charged with engaging in threatening, abusive and insulting behavior at Ballyguile on November 22, 2008.
He pleaded guilty to the charge and Garda Eoin McGrath told Judge Murrough Connellan that while he was on duty in the patrol car Nugent ‘began gesturing with his middle finger and shouted obscenities’ at the Garda car as it passed.
When Gardai approached Nugent he was very aggressive and abusive. Garda McGrath said there were a lot of people including young children in the area.
The court heard Nugent had 17 previous convictions and had been bound to keep the peace on at least two occasions, one of which was just a month before this incident.
Judge Connellan said Nugent had been bound to the peace on two occasions and sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment. He fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal and Nugent met the recognisances permitting him to walk free from the court until his appeal.
