THE NA­TIONAL JU­NIOR B Rac­quet­ball Cham­pi­onships were held in Ark­low on the 24th Jan­uary.

The Ark­low Ju­nior squad turned out in force and did the club proud by winning three gold, one sil­ver and one bronze medal.

Reece Young fought his way to the Boys Un­der-10 fi­nal where he de­feated Tem­pled­erry’s Conor Looby in a 2-0 victory. Paddy Dodd con­tin­ued his winning suc­cess by tak­ing the Boys Un­der-14 ti­tle, de­feat­ing Mark Glee­son (Tem­pled­erry) 2-0.

Orla Byrne played some great rac­quet­ball to win the Girls Un­der-18 ti­tle in a 2-0 win over Sinead Cor­co­ran from Ross­more.

Kevin O’Re­gan was nar­rowly de­feated in the Boys Un­der-18 in a 2-1 tie-breaker to Ger­ard Fog­a­rty from Ross­more.

Seánie Fitzger­ald walked away with bronze af­ter be­ing de­feated in the semi­fi­nals of the Boys Un­der14. Ark­low Rac­quet­ball Com­mit­tee would like to con­grat­u­late the Ju­nior squad on their suc­cess and on the good sports­man­ship that was dis­played on the day.

The Ark­low Rac­quet­ball Club cham­pi­onships were held last week­end in the Sports Cen­tre with eight sep­a­rate grades be­ing run. The Ju­nior Girls A saw Anita Byrne take the ti­tle for the sec­ond year by de­feat­ing April Byrne 2-0.

The Ju­nior Boys B was won by Cian Kenny in a 2-0 victory over Reece Young. There seems to be no stop­ping Paddy Dodd, he took home the Boys Ju­nior A cup af­ter de­feat­ing Gra­ham Young 2-0, he also won the Mens D cup, de­feat­ing John Breen 2-0, if he keeps up the train­ing he’s sure to do well in the up com­ing Ju­nior All Ire­lands in March.

The Mens C cup was won by Thomas Fitzger­ald, who de­feated John Breen 2-0. The Mens B cup was won by Brian Byrne in a 2-1 tie-breaker against John Fitzger­ald.

The Ladies A cup was won by Toni Neary who de­feated Orla Byrne 2-0 in the fi­nal. The Mens A cup was won by Joe Far­rell in a thrilling 2-1 tiebreaker against Adam Neary.

A great week­end was had by all, with spe­cial thanks to Sheila Neary and Joy Cros­bie of the Ark­low com­mit­tee who pro­vided tea, sand­wiches and bis­cuits to all play­ers and spec­ta­tors for the week­end.

Thanks also to Jimmy Gan­non for do­nat­ing a new pair of rac­quet­ball run­ners, which were won by Conor Cleary in a free raf­fle be­tween the qual­i­fy­ing Ju­niors.

The next com­pe­ti­tion is the Moy­lagh Open in Co. Meath next week­end the 7th and 8th Fe­bru­ary. The Na­tional Dou­bles and Over­age cham­pi­onships will be held in Ark­low on the 21st and 22nd Fe­bru­ary, clos­ing date for en­tries is the 14th Fe­bru­ary, all en­tries to Adam Neary.

The com­mit­tee would like to re­mind Ju­niors that bag pack­ing will be tak­ing place in Tesco for Valen­tine’s week­end, be sure and have your times in.
