Arklow Racquetball Club news
THE NATIONAL JUNIOR B Racquetball Championships were held in Arklow on the 24th January.
The Arklow Junior squad turned out in force and did the club proud by winning three gold, one silver and one bronze medal.
Reece Young fought his way to the Boys Under-10 final where he defeated Templederry’s Conor Looby in a 2-0 victory. Paddy Dodd continued his winning success by taking the Boys Under-14 title, defeating Mark Gleeson (Templederry) 2-0.
Orla Byrne played some great racquetball to win the Girls Under-18 title in a 2-0 win over Sinead Corcoran from Rossmore.
Kevin O’Regan was narrowly defeated in the Boys Under-18 in a 2-1 tie-breaker to Gerard Fogarty from Rossmore.
Seánie Fitzgerald walked away with bronze after being defeated in the semifinals of the Boys Under14. Arklow Racquetball Committee would like to congratulate the Junior squad on their success and on the good sportsmanship that was displayed on the day.
The Arklow Racquetball Club championships were held last weekend in the Sports Centre with eight separate grades being run. The Junior Girls A saw Anita Byrne take the title for the second year by defeating April Byrne 2-0.
The Junior Boys B was won by Cian Kenny in a 2-0 victory over Reece Young. There seems to be no stopping Paddy Dodd, he took home the Boys Junior A cup after defeating Graham Young 2-0, he also won the Mens D cup, defeating John Breen 2-0, if he keeps up the training he’s sure to do well in the up coming Junior All Irelands in March.
The Mens C cup was won by Thomas Fitzgerald, who defeated John Breen 2-0. The Mens B cup was won by Brian Byrne in a 2-1 tie-breaker against John Fitzgerald.
The Ladies A cup was won by Toni Neary who defeated Orla Byrne 2-0 in the final. The Mens A cup was won by Joe Farrell in a thrilling 2-1 tiebreaker against Adam Neary.
A great weekend was had by all, with special thanks to Sheila Neary and Joy Crosbie of the Arklow committee who provided tea, sandwiches and biscuits to all players and spectators for the weekend.
Thanks also to Jimmy Gannon for donating a new pair of racquetball runners, which were won by Conor Cleary in a free raffle between the qualifying Juniors.
The next competition is the Moylagh Open in Co. Meath next weekend the 7th and 8th February. The National Doubles and Overage championships will be held in Arklow on the 21st and 22nd February, closing date for entries is the 14th February, all entries to Adam Neary.
The committee would like to remind Juniors that bag packing will be taking place in Tesco for Valentine’s weekend, be sure and have your times in.
