Michael Dwyers lead way in U-12 hurling tournament
THE TOM Ryan Indoor Hurling Tournament for U-12s, organised by St. Patrick’s GAA club, continued with the fourth round of games at Arklow Leisure Centre on Saturday, January 17.
Michael Dwyers remain top of the table after battling out crucial wins against St. Patrick’s, a very close encounter with Arklow Rocks which finished 4-3 in Dwyer’s favour, and a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Barndarrig, who remain second. Glenealy are just a point behind in third, closely followed by St.Patrick’s. Arklow Rocks and Eire Og share the mid table position, with Enniskerry and Kilcoole also in joint position at the lower end of the table. It was a good day at the office for Enniskerry who scored a 5-3 win over Kilcoole, and held neighbours Eire Og to a 3-3 draw in a thrilling contest.
The match of the day however was undoubtedly the clash of the titans, Michael Dwyers and Barndarrig.
Both of these teams have shown themselves capable of notching up high scores in previous games, however on this occasion goals were scarce in an extremely closelyfought affair.
Both sets of players deserve credit for the intensity of the display of hurling, particularly the goalkeepers, Michael Crowley for Barndarrig and Daragh Byrne for Michael Dwyers, both of whom showed great judgement and skill under pressure.
Michael Dwyers were first to score after a shot from Rachel Byrne, who was excellent in defence throughout the day. Barndarrig upped the tempo and eventually found the net after great work by Andrew Peter Gilsenan Kavanagh. Despite the furious pace, neither team was able to break the deadlock after this, again a credit to the skilful defending and goalkeepers on both sides. It finished one all, with both teams having delivered a tremendous performance.
Michael Dwyers: Daragh Byrne, Padraic O’Toole, Dan O’Hara, Seánie Germaine, Pádraic Byrne, Liam Keogh, Rachel Byrne, Shane O’Toole, Bryan Murphy.
