TWO WICKLOW snowboarders were saved from an icy death last night after being plucked from snow-bound Lugnaquilla Mountain after one the biggest ever combined rescue operations in Ireland.

A huge rescue operation swung into place to find the men who disappeared after losing their map on the fogbound mountainside on Monday night.

British RAF helicopters flew in rescue teams from Wales to bolster teams from Sligo, Mayo, Leinster and Northern Ireland.

After hours of air and ground searches the men were found alive, but suffering from exposure.

‘Both are safe and well and have been transferred to Tallaght Hospital,’ a source at the rescue centre near the base of the mountain said yesterday evening.

One of the casualties is transferred from an Irish Coast Guard helicopter to an Army Air Corps helicopter before being brought to Tallaght hospital, yesterday (Tuesday) evening. Picture: Garry O’Neill.
