A GARDA was due to be posted outside the Town Hall for last night’s Council meeting following a heated exchange the previous week between Cllr. Caroline Burrell and local trader Shane Rowan.

The argument arose after the meeting that week, and began when Mr. Rowan took exception to Cllr. Burrell using her mobile phone, seemingly to text, during the meeting. He approached her and a discussion ensued.

As voices rose, Cllr. Burrell called to the other members for help and Mr. Rowan was asked to leave the chamber. While there is a standing order in place preventing the use of mobile phones, Cllr. Burrell said that this refers to only the use of the device for talking.

‘As long as it’s not disturbing the meeting it’s ok,’ she said. ‘One could be texting a constituent to update them on their issue. I could have been texting home about the children.’

She added that the particular meeting had been very productive, with all councillors working together. Mr. Rowan maintains that the use of mobiles in the chamber is ‘a disgrace.’
