Principal makes request to boost floodlight funds
EAST GLENDALOUGH ASTROTURF PITCH PLANS PUT BEFORE COUNCIL
THE HEADMASTER of East Glendalough School presented plans for a full-size multi-purpose astroturf pitch to Wicklow Town Council in the hope of securing funding for some floodlights.
Mr. Alan Cox was at pains to point out that the facility would be open for use to the whole Wicklow community.
The school already has a proven track record of supporting and facilitating community organisations including Wicklow Rovers, Wicklow Town, St. Patrick’s CLG, Blue Dolphins, Inbhear Dee, Lady Gators Basketball, Wicklow Bridge Club, Wicklow Badminton Club and various youth and school organisations.
Right from the offset a reasonable Mr. Cox said he knew the Town Council weren’t exactly overburdened with an overflow of funds.
‘If it suits to help, great. If it doesn’t then we understand given the current economic climate and we won’t fall out over it.’
The first phase of construction took place last year and required substantial levelling work including installing a drainage system to meet the specifications of an astroturf pitch. At the moment the site is being left to settle and consolidate.
The completion of the project is expected to take place in the summer. The Board of Management are holding off until March for tenders as they expect to receive better prices due to deflation in the construction market.
€ 165,000 has already been spent on phase one with the remaining costs expected to reach € 500,000. The non-fee paying school haven’t received any Government funding for the project, which has the full support of all other secondary schools in the area. Mr. Cox also stressed that the school would definitely go ahead with the second construction phase this year, and the facility would in no way replace plans for Brideshead.
Town Manager Michael Nicholson promised to look at the Council levy scheme and see if any money is available for a contribution toward the cost of the floodlights.
