THE Niall Mellon Township Trust held a recent briefing meeting in the Ballsbridge Court Hotel for its Leinster Building Blitz Volunteers, including a sizeable Wicklow contingent.

The trust operates a year-round housing building programme for impoverished families in the townships of South Africa. So far since 2002 some 11,000 houses have been built.

The volunteers involved head off to South Africa for a building blitz starting on March 20 and ending seven days later. 500 volunteers will be involved, and as in past years, a number of these hail from County Wicklow. At the briefing meeting 17 volunteers from Wicklow were present, but that figure could easily increase by the time they depart.

This time the aim is to build 75 houses in a week in the township of Mbekweni, in Paarl, sixty minutes from Cape Town.

Last year 2,000 volunteers from 13 countries took part in the blitz, building a staggering 253 homes in the space of a single week.

Volunteers Tony Quinn, Aidan Flynn and Brendan O’Cearbhaill from Bray and Se de Barra from Shankill at the Dublin briefing for the Niall MellonTrust.
