IR­ISH LIFE fig­ures for 2008 show that heart-re­lated prob­lems are the main cause of ill­ness and death ben­e­fit claims in County Wick­low.

The largest provider of live as­sur­ance and spec­i­fied ill­ness cover in the coun­try es­ti­mate that 31 per cent of all spec­i­fied ill­ness claims and death ben­e­fits last year in Wick­low in­volved heart con­di­tions. Can­cer ac­counted for 28 per cent of claims.

Th­ese fig­ures with the na­tional fig­ure of 50 per cent can­cer re­lated claims and 22 per cent heart re­lated. In Le­in­ster the av­er­age is 48 per cent for can­cer re­lated claims and 22 per cent for heart-re­lated claims.

Over­all Ir­ish Life paid out €2.2 mil­lion in 31 death ben­e­fit cases in Wick­low in 2008. A fur­ther €449,000 was paid out in re­spect of 11 spec­i­fied ill­ness claims. The av­er­age age for death ben­e­fit pay­outs in the county last year was 63 for a male and 65 for fe­males.
