IRISH LIFE figures for 2008 show that heart-related problems are the main cause of illness and death benefit claims in County Wicklow.
The largest provider of live assurance and specified illness cover in the country estimate that 31 per cent of all specified illness claims and death benefits last year in Wicklow involved heart conditions. Cancer accounted for 28 per cent of claims.
These figures with the national figure of 50 per cent cancer related claims and 22 per cent heart related. In Leinster the average is 48 per cent for cancer related claims and 22 per cent for heart-related claims.
Overall Irish Life paid out €2.2 million in 31 death benefit cases in Wicklow in 2008. A further €449,000 was paid out in respect of 11 specified illness claims. The average age for death benefit payouts in the county last year was 63 for a male and 65 for females.
