SOME up and coming young Gordon Ramsey’s in the making, minus the bad language, pitted their culinary skills against one another in the Wicklow Rotary Young Chef of the Year competition.

Basically competitors had to demonstrate their skills in menu and budget planning, sourcing and purchasing ingredients, hygienically cooking and serving a healthy two or three course meal for two.

East Glendalough and the Abbey Community College both already held heats in the school to decide who makes it through to the Wicklow district final, organised by the Wicklow Rotary Club.

At the district final held in the Grand Hotel they were also questioned by experienced chefs about what they were doing and how the selected their menu and ingredients.

Due to the high standards shown by all the district finalists, the judges had spent a great deal of time debating who the eventual winner would be.

Finally it was decided that Sarah Byrne of the Abbey Community College was the winner, just edging out Stephen Marshall of East Glendalough into runners-up spot.

Sarah will now go on to the regional final and from there hopefully the prestigious national final.
