His mother Joan is a member of Bray Flower club and her friends there rallied round last Friday night at the Little Flower Hall, raising more than €10,000 for the equipment he will need to rebuild his life.

There were five demonstrators who used the flowers donated from a range of flower businesses to created beautiful bouquets that were late raffled to the audience.

The venue was brimming with people, coming very close to the full capacity of 260. Martin came along and spoke to the women, joking that he would have arrived earlier if he’d known there would be so many women present.

A spokeswoman said that Newcourt Road woman Joan was very touched by the support of the club. ‘The atmosphere was amazing,’ said member Monica Coade. ‘I have been to loads of demonstrations but never anything with such feelings of love and kindness.’
