Heffernan scores crucial goal to earn Rovers points

Bray People - - Bray Sport -

PAUL HEFFERNAN scored the only goal of the game in his side’s 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday to move Doncaster Rovers closer to safety in 16th position in the Coca Cola Championship, to record their first ever league win over rivals Wednesday and become the club’s joint top scorer with five goals for the season, all in a days work for the Newtown man.

Heffernan was on hand to nod home a James Coppinger cross at the near post 31 minutes into Saturday’s game, and his side managed to defend the lead to go seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Speaking shortly after the game, Heffernan was understandably delighted.

‘It was nice to get the goal,’ beamed Heffernan.

‘I had a chance just before that, which went over. So, it was nice to get that one in and pick up the three points. I’m delighted.

‘He’s (James Coppinger) done brilliantly over in the corner and he’s put a fantastic ball in and once it went over the defender’s head, I couldn’t miss really. I just needed to get a good contact onto it and thankfully I did that.’

As regards his club’s chances of staying up this season, he decided to keep his cards close to his chest.

‘There’s a long way to go yet and we’ll stick with the old cliché and take each game as it comes. We’ll keep doing the work on the training ground and hopefully, we will do enough to stay up.’

Following his goal scoring exploits at the weekend, Paul Heffernan was included in the Coca-Cola Championship Team of the Week, along with two of his team-mates.
