Former footballers to step into the ring
FIVE OF Wicklow’s former top footballers were always well able to fight their corner on the football fields whether playing for their club or county.
Now former all-star footballer Kevin O’Brien, Mick Murtagh, midfielders Fergus Daly and Raymond ‘Rocky’ Danne and Thomas Harney will be stepping into the boxing ring to trade punches for real.
They will be taking on Kildare opponents in a boxing tournament on St. Patrick’s night and will be hoping to emulate the success of the footballers last year when they beat Kildare in the opening round of the Leinster championship, their first championship win in Croke Park. Kevin O’Brien, one of Mick O’Dwyer’s selectors with the present county football team, and his boxing colleagues will be swapping punches with some of Kildare’s former foot- ballers all for a good cause - that of raising money for the local Grangecon Boxing Club near Baltinglass.
Kevin O’Brien will be taking on former Kildare GAA stalwart Liam Miley who will have the advantage of boxing before his home crowd as the tournament is being held inside the Kildare border in St. Laurence’s GAA Club.
The footballers will see ring action for three, two minute rounds and the programme on the night will also feature bouts involving Grangecon’s senior and junior boxing champions. Surely an event not to be missed.
