Jockey impersonator caught after escaping jail
A JOCKEY impersonator and convicted fraudster was caught last week after he managed to escape from Shelton Abbey.
Terry Kirby has already impersonated such well known racing figures as Dean Gallagher, Graham Lee, Timmy Murphy, Shay Barry, Leighton Aspell and others. He was serving an eight month sentence in Shelton Abbey for car robbery when he managed to make his getaway.
Once news of Kirby’s escape became public knowledge, the Turf Club immediately alerted subscribers about a man ‘masquerading as a trainer or jockey.’ They were warned to contact the Gardaí if they were approached by the individual.
He was initially imprisoned for stealing a car belonging to former jockey Conor O’Dwyer. Kildare-born Kirby called around to his house in November in a BMW jeep and told O’Dwyer that it was owned by jockey Richard Hughes and that he was going to get a taxi back to Naas.
When O’Dwyer awoke in the morning, his car was missing. The jeep was still sitting outside but that also turned out to be stolen. The stolen car was later found in Dungarvan.
After making his escape Kirby was captured and held in custody at Carlow Garda Station.
