Rathdrum youths storm into Leinster final
ON A fantastic day for Rathdrum RFC, the clubs Under-16 team secured Rathdrum’s first ever appearance in an underage Leinster final with a hard-fought 17-7 win over Wexford RFC in Arklow.
This is probably the best group of players to come through the Rathdrum system, they have stuck together over the last few years and have really stepped up a notch this year storming their way to the semifinal with some great results.
They now have an enormous opportunity to be Leinster champions. However, win or lose, the club and county should be very proud of these lads.
The game, which had to be replayed after it was called off at half-time two weeks ago due to the weather, was always going to be a tricky affair. Rathdrum had lead the first game 7-0 before it had been called off, so where relatively confident.
The game kicked off with Rathdrum immediately applying pressure from the start with the opening score coming from a forward drive straight up the middle of the pitch with Niall Doyle touching down. A great team try, converted by Conor McGraynor. The first-half ended with Rathdrum in the lead 7-0
The second-half started off very much like the first-half with Rathdrum dominating possession and working hard across the pitch.
This resulted in Wexford infringing, the resultant penalty was converted by McGraynor to leave the score 10-0. Then against the run of play the Wexford full-back broke and scored a fine individual try to leave the score 10-7.
This was when you really saw the backbone of this Rathdrum team. They came out fighting and it wasn’t long before they regained their two score cushion with a fine try by McGraynor to leave the score 17-7. Wexford never really got back in the game after that and Rathdrum finished comfortable winners.
This was a complete team performance and a big well done needs to go to the team and to their coaches.
Rathdrum are now through to the final against Edenderry at a venue to be decided. It is hugely important that when the date is announced that supporters make a big effort to get down and cheer the lads on.
