Greystones record great win over Phoenix
Phoenix AFC 1, Greystones AFC 2: Greystones followed up their good performance against league leaders Bangor Celtic last week with a great away win this weekend against high-flying Phoenix AFC.
LSL SENIOR DIVISION ‘Stones are starting to get all their players match fit again after several suffered injuries and their last two outings belie their position in the league table.
Greystones dominated this match against Phoenix from start to finish and always looked the likely winners. Wayne Byrne marshalled the defence and Stephen Roche was back to his best in midfield.
Richie O’Hanlon was the architect of the opening goal when his measured cross was met by Shay Brien who bulleted a header past the home keeper.
‘Stones felt they should have had a penalty in the 43rd minute when Brien was hauled down in the area, but the ref gave the free to Phoenix who went upfield and their centre-forward was felled in the box from which they equalised from the resultant penalty.
The visitors won the match in the 65th minute when the evergreen Shay Brien drilled home a great shot from just outside the area. Roche, Brien and Thompson all went close late on to score a third but were just wide with their efforts.
