TWO COUNTY Wicklow GPs were among the top 100 earners in State under the general medical services scheme (GMS) last year, according to a list published on Monday.

The State (HSE) last year paid out close to € 500 million in fees, grants and pension contributions to GPs operating the general medical services scheme (GMS).

About 2,000 family doctors receive fees under the GMS, which mainly relate to services provided to patients with medical cards.

For the first time last year a general practice received more than €1 million in fees under the scheme, that of Dublin-based Dr. Catherine Coleman. In 2007, the highest-earning practice received just over € 700,000 in fees.

The highest earner in Co. Wicklow is Dr John McManus, from Bray, who was paid €610,411, putting him 14th overall in Ireland.

Dr. Patrick Carolan from Baltinglass was the only other Wicklow doctor to feature on the list and he received €448,040 which saw him in 98th position.
