ALL MINDS were focused on ‘mushrooms’ at Rathdrum’s Avondale House on Friday, the setting for the launch of a new publication on the Fungi to be found in Irish woodlands.

Tom Killen TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food officially launched the guide ‘Forest Fungi of Ireland.’ The publication details 43 edible types of mushroom, 14 types best not to be eaten and 13 highly poisonous types to be avoided at all costs. The publication provides clear illustrations and descriptions of the various fungi, and is aimed at encouraging people to forge for wild and edible fungi.

Commenting at the launch, Minister Killeen noted, ‘It’s clear from this publication that there are non timber benefits to be gained from our woodlands that haven’t been fully exploited too date and undoubtedly there is a great scope for expansion in this area.’
