Williams double wins it for St. Anthony’s
ST. ANTHONY’S continued their good start to the new season with another win at the weekend.
The Kilcoole side welcomed Newtown United to Finn Park and won by a single goal margin with a 2-1 win. Jason Fitzsimons netted for the visitors but a Martin Williams double ensured that it would be the Saints who would be taking home the points on Sunday. That is now two home games for Anto’s and two wins and it looks like Anthony’s will be turning Finn Park into a fortress this season and with a strikeforce of Darren Collopy and Williams up front they will always carry a goal threat.
Glenview FC, who opened the season with a 3-3 home draw against Arklow Town, got their first win of the season thanks to a 5-1 drubbing of Arklow Celtic at the Celtic Park.
It was the Arklow’s side first outing of the season and it certainly wasn’t the start they would have been hoping for. Paul Farrell, twice on target for the Glens’ second team last week, proved he could hack it at the top level netting a superb hat-trick with Tony Harris and Clinton McCormack completing the scoring for the Bray side. Brian Moran was the man responsible for the Arklow side’s goal.
There two other matches that went ahead in the Premier Division this weekend, with Ashford Rovers travelling to Finlay Park to take on WicklowTown and St. Peter’s Bhoys making the short trip to Vevay Sports Field for their match with Wolfe Tone Celtic.
Ashford’s Jay Taylor gave his side the lead early in the first half but things were all square at the break thanks to Dennis Vickers’ leveller. Neither side could find the winner in the second period however so a point apiece was the outcome.
Meanwhile, Wolfe Tone and Peter’s played out a 0-0 draw meaning Celtic move on to four points and the Saints have got off the mark for this season.
Another team who got off the mark on Sunday were Shillelagh United who picked up three points courtesy of Rathnew AFC awarding them a walkover.
