Play based on Brian Keenan abduction staged in Mermaid
SOMEONE WHO’LL Watch Over Me is a play inspired by the captivity of Brian Keenan and John McCarthy and explores the complex relationship between three westerners taken hostage in Lebanon during the early 1990s.
Frank McGuinness’ Tony Award nominated play will be on in the Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, on October 10 and 11.
Edward, an Irish journalist, relies on his confrontational sense of humour
t o maintain his sanity. Adam, an American doctor, struggles to maintain his air of incorruptibility. Michael, an English academic, is thrown into a bizarre world where Edward and Adam have constructed equally bizarre coping mechanisms.
With nowhere to hide and only each other to turn to, the three men breathe life into their own nationalistic prejudices but ultimately find the solace, support and intimacy we all need to survive.
The play is a comp lex exami- nation of human relationships; of how we construct notions of ourselves and how others see us.
Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me is a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit.
Inspired by events surrounding Brian Keenan’s abduction in Beirut, this timeless classic has been described as ‘heartrendingly compassionate’ and is an absolute must-see for fans of the play and first-timers alike.
