Car park operator responds to criticism
THE OPERATOR of a car park in Glendalough has assured visitors from all over the county that the facility is operated and manned efficiently and safely.
Bray woman Tara O’Grady said last week that she travels to the beauty spot almost daily for a walk with her epileptic son, and she called the traffic there ‘chaotic,’ claiming that the car park is not manned.
‘The car park is staffed on a full-time basis every Friday, Saturday and Sunday,’ said Darren McGee of Killadreenan who has been in charge of the parking spaces for the last number of months.
He conceded that on a busy day, particularly at weekends, there can be a delay in getting to the car park. ‘ Everybody comes at once,’ he said. ‘For the safety of everybody we need to keep a disciplined flow of cars to avoid any incidents.’
He said that a certain amount of spaces are always kept empty. ‘We have safety in mind and emergency services might need access. We always have space in the car park to manoeuvre queues for access. At times this will annoy visitors to the car park as they feel we have space available and are not allowing them in, but safety comes first.’
Ms. O’Grady also said that it had taken her an hour and a half to get from Gledalough to Laragh.
‘We are only responsible for the spaces inside the car park,’ said Darren. ‘Not the fact that visitors choose to park on double yellow lines on the public roads,’ he said.
Mr. McGee added that his company has not heard any complaints regarding the facility, including the €4 price. He said that the park is free from 6.30 p.m. to 10 p.m. so that local people can enjoy Glendalough and park there at no charge at off-peak times. Tourist buses are also free.
