Groups urging public to join in protest march
TWO BRAY community groups have called upon local people and representatives to join a march from Parnell Square to the Dáíl today to protest against current and proposed cuts to the community sector.
The protest will assemble at Parnell Square at 1 p.m. Both the Little Bray Family Resource Centre and the Bray Travellers Community Development Group will be represented.
‘ Further cuts will mean that our community, which is already experiencing increasing unemployment and economic hardship, will also lose the valuable support that our community development project provides,’ said Niamh Wogan of the Little Bray Family Resource Centre. ‘Over the last six months we have experienced a huge increase in the numbers of people using all our services.’
The catchment area of the Bray Travellers Community Development Group stretches from Shankill to Kilcoole. ‘ Over the last number of months we have experienced a huge increase in the numbers of people using all of our services,’ said Jim O’Brien. ‘We have a waiting list for some of our programmes and further cuts will mean that our community, which is already one of the most disadvantaged in our society, will face even more disadvantage, increasing isolation and economic hardship.’
They say that the proposals of the McCarthy ‘ Bord Snip Nua’ report will devastate services to children, people with disabilities, the elderly, recovering drug addicts, youths, travellers, women and others.
Some Little Bray services include adult education, community employment, a crèche and a youth project.
BTCD provides an after-school mentoring programme, a Traveller women’s training programme, a clinic for substance misusers from the wider communities and men’s football.
