Travel agency staff reeling from double closure shock
RECESSION LATEST BUDGET TRAVEL BOSSES CONTINUE DISCUSSING REDUNDANCIES
FALCON TRAVEL on Quinsboro Road will close its doors by the end of October, while Bray’s Budget Travel could be one of 14 of the group’s stores to close in the same time period.
A Falcon staff member has confirmed that they were told in recent weeks that the shop would close. There are six people employed there, some of whom have only ever worked in travel while at least two are there less than a year.
The business will be absorbed by other shops in the group. ‘We are obviously devastated,’ said a staff member. ‘That’s the way it is everywhere now. Business has been getting very quiet as we can’t compete with the internet.’
Meanwhile, Budget Travel has confirmed that it will close 14 of its stores around the country by the end of next month. But the company says it is still talking to staff about the number of redundancies that are likely to result from the closures.
In the middle of last August, the company announced it had begun a 30-day consultation process with staff, which was likely to result in the closure of 14 of its 31 stores, and the loss of 95 jobs between the shops and head office. The company currently employs 266 people.
A spokesman for the company said the closure of the shops would happen, but the company was still in consultation with staff with a view to trying to save as many jobs as possible. He added that the company is examining some options which could save some of the jobs.
