Good old GAA punch up in store for Paddy’s Day
THERE will be a Paddy’s Day ‘punch up’ between footballers from Wicklow and Kildare at St Laurence’s GFC Pavillion.
However, this punch up at the south Co Kildare club is a goodnatured match up in aid of a very good cause, with all proceeds going towards the Grangecon Boxing Club Renovation Fund.
There will be eighteen bouts in all, featuring footballers from clubs in Wicklow (Dunlavin, Donard/Glen and Baltinglass) and Kildare (St. Laurence’s and Kilcullen).
Among the footballers boxing on the night will be Anthony Nolan (Baltinglass), Justin Birchall (Dunlavin), Larry Daly (Donard/Glen) and former county player Sean O’Brien (Baltinglass).
Two girls Emma Harney and Claire Murphy will also be fighting on the night, while in the ‘vintage’ section there is also one bout – Tommy Byrne versus Joe Murphy!
This is the second year of this event and it’s hoped that next Wednesday night’s event will be even more successful than last year, when over 1,500 people from Wicklow and Kildare came along to support the fighters at what proved to be a great night out.
Grangecon Boxing Club’s European and National Champions Ross Hickey and Denis Hogan will be there on St Patrick’s night, keeping a keen eye on proceedings, which begin at 7.30 p.m. Admission is €15.
