We managed three wins from six games played last weekend. Our under-8s lost 5-1 at home to Ardmore Rovers. Alex O’Toole scored the Newtown goal while James Crean was the star performer for the home side.

The under-9s are finding life diffucult in the top flight after another reverse this time away to Greystones. Adam Heffernan got on the scoresheet for Newtown while Darren Magee and Lee Turner played well.

The under-10s played their last league game at home to Wicklow Town and sadly lost the game on a 5-2 scoreline. Seán Gregory and Corey Sullivan scored the Newtown goals.

The under-13s travelled to Bray for the second week running to play Ardmore Rovers this time in the league. They had a turn in their fortunes this week after last week’s Shield defeat and came out on top on a 7-4 scoreline. Ciarán Daly scored an impressive hat-trick, Mark O’Brien scored twice and goals were also scored by Alex Heffernan and Ciarán Doherty. Best players on the day were Becky Cassin, Aodhan Garvey and Jamie Keddy.

With Ashford having already won the league title, the runners-up spot is down between these two teams and this result puts our team right back in the mix.

The under-12s completed their group fixtures in the Shield to finish joint top with Arklow Town and a play-off to determine first and second will now be needed. This was because they defeated Wicklow Rovers 4-1 at home. Keith Dalton gave Newtown an early lead but Rovers equalised almost immediately. Newtown restored their lead before half-time when after a lovely pass from Evan Moran, Dillon Carthy finished from six yards. Vova Ribakov made an excellent run on the left wing before letting fly from 20 yards. His shot hit the crossbar but Dalton following up tapped home to the net from close range. The scoring was completed five minutes from time when Kenneth Turner scored a neat headed goal from close range. On the day best for Newtown were Ribakov and Steven Kennedy. The girl’s under12s made the short journey to play Enniskerry girls in their latest league game and came away with a narrow 3-2 victory. Ten minutes in Lauren Nolan opened the scoring with a rasper from 20 yards. Though the girls had other scoring chances the score remained 1-0 at the break.

In the early exchanges of the second-half both teams could have had further goals but the second goal came when Nolan slipped Hollie Murphy in and she finished from six yards despite a valiant attempt by the Enniskerry keeper to keep the ball out.

Five minutes later Enniskerry halved the defecit with a long-range effort and were beginning to put extended pressure on the Newtown goal. The crucial goal came eight minutes from time when after a good move involving Amy Irwin and Katie Miley, Caoimhe Heffernan shot against the post, but Lauren Nolan following up scored from close range.

Enniskerry did score in the last minute but it proved to be only a consolation goal. Best for the girls on the day were Katie Mullally, Melanie Clarke and Cliona Crammond.

A girl’s team containing 10/11 year olds played a friendly on Saturday against Vale View and despite losing the game Hannah Doyle, Jessie Kenny and Megan Yoder played really well. Aine Gammall scored the Newtown goal.
