Greystones too good for Edenderry
Greystones AFC 4 Edenderry Town 1
GREYSTONES TOOK the lead in this one after just 12 minutes when Phil Cooney’s cross was deflected into his own net by an Edenderry defender.
The hosts then doubled their lead in the 26th minute. Paul O’Sullivan began a fine team move before running onto Neil Fenton’s lay-on to crash the ball home from 20 yards.
It wasn’t all one-way traffic though, and Stones keeper John Blake had to be alert to deny Edenderry from a free-kick.
The visitors task then got more difficult when the home side got their third. A good move involving Aaron O’Connor and Cooney saw Jason Byrne skin the full-back before pulling it back for Greg Breslin to slot home.
And Breslin’s side then all but wrapped up the points before the break after Jason Byrne set up Breslin with another cross from the right, and the midfielder was able to beat the Edenderry custodian to grab his second of the afternoon.
Two good saves from Blake in the 55th and then 60th minute kept the visitors at bay but they did pull a goal back in the 78th minute after their centre-half powerfully headed home from a corner.
Breslin then came close to netting a hat-trick in the dying minutes, but he shot wide after beating two defenders.
