Unlucky 13 as Dick has to accept defeat
AT THE END of the 13th count in Wicklow, returning officer Patricia Casey was forced to call for order as a loud cheer rang out when Dick Roche's elimination was announced.
She said Roche had asked for a recount and re-examination of the votes as there were only three votes separating him and running mate, Pat Fitzgerald.
To groans of disbelief at the news of the recount Ms. Casey adjourned the count until 9am on Monday morning.
On Monday there was a general air of confusion throughout the morning as information about what was happening was very sketchy and it eventually emerged that the votes off all the candidates had been rechecked and votes that were in dispute were tagged.
In mid afternoon all the disputed votes were examined by candidates' agents and any that passed muster were allowed to stand.
This took several hours and after the issue with spoilt votes in Laois Offaly the spoilt votes were also re-examined and shortly before 8pm Ms. Casey said the rechecking of the votes ‘didn't materially alter the result of the 13th count' and said Roche was eliminated which was greeted by massive cheer from many of those present.
