School tour to thrill and stimulate students!

Bray People - - SCHOOL TOURS -

ARE YOU looking for an experience for your students that is scary, historical, educational, emotional and always highly entertaining? Then look no further than Wicklow’s Historic Gaol, known as the most haunted location in Ireland and featured on both local and National radio and on National and International TV.

Actors in character, a life-size Tread wheel, a Hanging Cell, prisoners’ graffiti - and much more - will further improve an already exceptional visitor attraction.

New for this year at Wicklow’s Historic Gaol, is an exclusive exhibition dedicated to “Robert Erskine Childers” father of the late President Erskine Childers.

Your brief incarceration will start in the hands of the corrupt Gaoler, Richard Hoey, who will make you as comfortable as only he knows how, whilst he introduces you to early 18th century prison life. Then wander on through the cells and meet the other Gaol characters, like Wolfe Tone and larger than life Mary Morris, who can be found setting out the daily routine for the female prisoners and warning them of the punishments for disobeying her orders. One such punishment is the Tread wheel, a dreaded form of early punishment in the prison system. Now, you too can stand on the Tread wheel and imagine the pain of spending five monotonous hours turning the wheel.

The original Gaol dungeon is open for visitors to see the flogging cell, while the more courageous have the opportunity to enter the solitary confinement cell and experience the desperation and terror of those who had to endure the punishment.

Finally, just as your brief stay at Wicklow Gaol comes to a close and you think you will be released - have you considered that you might be transported to New South Wales? Aboard the “Hercules”, under the captaincy of the psychotic Luckyn Betts, you will learn of the cruelty and conditions endured by the prisoners on this 6 month journey…

The Halpin Museum is also housed in the Gaol, and many visitors are now enjoying “The Halpin Trail” through Wicklow Town after their Gaol visit. There is also a newly refurbished bistro cafe to relax and refresh after your arduous ordeal!
