Newtown make hard work of it

Bray People - - SPORT -

NEWTOWN UNITED remain in the hunt to retain their Jim McLaughlin Premier Trophy crown, but the Magpies made very hard work of it on Sunday.

The Matt Kelly Memorial Grounds outfit found themselves trailing 2-0 to Arklow Celtic after 30 minutes of their first round tie.

Shane Mooney pulled a goal back for the visitors at Celtic Park just before half-time. United looked set to bow out of the competition with full-time fast approaching at the Arklow venue but then captain PJ Dowling came to his side's rescue with a 92nd minute effort to force the match into extra-time.

And a relieved Newtown side turned on the style in extra-time to run out 2-5 winners. Billy Clarkson put them ahead in the first minute of extra-time and then Dessie Waters put them out of sight with a well-taken double.

Fassaroe's Dan Kelly challenges as Ballywaltrim's Paul Melia clears while keeper Brian O’Toole watches on during the league match at Ballywaltrim.
