Michael Dwyers ‘Whites’ tops in under-12 league
THE FINAL round of League matches in the Tom Ryan Indoor Hurling Tournament for U-12s was played on Saturday last at Arklow Leisure Centre, with table toppers Michael Dwyers “Whites” eventually securing their status as League champions.
This was despite their continuous unbeaten run being ended by a 9-8 defeat in an epic battle with main rivals Glenealy. Glenealy began the day knowing they could tie for the top spot if they beat Kilcoole and Dwyers.
They managed the first part of the proposition despite tough opposition from Kilcoole and then went on to triumph in a rip roaring encounter with Dwyers. However they also needed the league leaders not to take any points from their meeting with Kilcoole, and this was not to be as Dwyers outscored Kilcooole 12 goals to 1 on this occasion, and finished an excellent league campaign as 2011 champions.
Oisin Curry battled well in the goals for Kilcoole while Ronan O'Kelly was very unfortunate not to score. Ross Stevenson got Kilcoole's goal with a rocket shot from midfield. Karl Furlong and Michael Clynch were high scorers for Michael Dwyers while Brian Carney and Fionn Murphy were important in defence.
For Glenealy Conor Devlin and Jack Veale played crucial roles in the backs, while Gary McCann emerged from the goals to score with expertly taken long-range free. Gary Hughes and Jonathan O'Neill scored with some excellent shots and James Byrne also got on the scoreboard.
The top four teams in the League - Michael Dwyers, Glenealy, Arklow Rocks, and Kilcoole - can now look forward to the finals of the Cup competition, while the bottom two - Michael Dwyers “Reds” and Aughrim - will face off in the finals of the Plate competition. The Cup and Plate finals for the U-10s will also take place on the same day, Saturday March 12, in Arklow Leisure Centre, and the presentation ceremony and refreshments will take place afterwards in the Arklow Rocks Parnells clubhouse, where county hurling star Don Hyland will present the trophies to the winning teams.
