Michael Dwyers ‘Whites’ tops in un­der-12 league

THE FI­NAL round of League matches in the Tom Ryan In­door Hurl­ing Tour­na­ment for U-12s was played on Satur­day last at Ark­low Leisure Cen­tre, with ta­ble top­pers Michael Dwyers “Whites” even­tu­ally se­cur­ing their sta­tus as League cham­pi­ons.

This was de­spite their con­tin­u­ous un­beaten run be­ing ended by a 9-8 de­feat in an epic battle with main ri­vals Gle­nealy. Gle­nealy be­gan the day know­ing they could tie for the top spot if they beat Kil­coole and Dwyers.

They man­aged the first part of the propo­si­tion de­spite tough op­po­si­tion from Kil­coole and then went on to tri­umph in a rip roar­ing en­counter with Dwyers. How­ever they also needed the league lead­ers not to take any points from their meet­ing with Kil­coole, and this was not to be as Dwyers outscored Kil­cooole 12 goals to 1 on this oc­ca­sion, and fin­ished an ex­cel­lent league cam­paign as 2011 cham­pi­ons.

Oisin Curry bat­tled well in the goals for Kil­coole while Ro­nan O'Kelly was very un­for­tu­nate not to score. Ross Steven­son got Kil­coole's goal with a rocket shot from mid­field. Karl Fur­long and Michael Clynch were high scor­ers for Michael Dwyers while Brian Car­ney and Fionn Mur­phy were im­por­tant in de­fence.

For Gle­nealy Conor Devlin and Jack Veale played cru­cial roles in the backs, while Gary McCann emerged from the goals to score with ex­pertly taken long-range free. Gary Hughes and Jonathan O'Neill scored with some ex­cel­lent shots and James Byrne also got on the score­board.

The top four teams in the League - Michael Dwyers, Gle­nealy, Ark­low Rocks, and Kil­coole - can now look for­ward to the fi­nals of the Cup competition, while the bot­tom two - Michael Dwyers “Reds” and Aughrim - will face off in the fi­nals of the Plate competition. The Cup and Plate fi­nals for the U-10s will also take place on the same day, Satur­day March 12, in Ark­low Leisure Cen­tre, and the pre­sen­ta­tion cer­e­mony and re­fresh­ments will take place af­ter­wards in the Ark­low Rocks Par­nells club­house, where county hurl­ing star Don Hy­land will present the tro­phies to the win­ning teams.
