Praise flows for excellent work of Casey and his team
CLLR. PAT CASEY, who oversaw the All Party Tally during the recent General Election count in Wicklow, was lauded at last week’s meeting of Wicklow County Council.
Despite widespread condemnation at the lack of communication from officials at the count Cllr. Casey was praised for his efforts
Cllr. Pat Vance said, ‘Only for Cllr. Casey people wouldn’t have known anything. There should have been electronic equipment and proper training for people during the county.’
Cllr. John Snell thanked Cllr. Casey and his team for ‘their excellent work’. Cllr. John Byrne also paid tribute to Cllr. Casey for his Trojan work on the day.
Cllr. Casey said he had been asked to oversee the tally and he thanked Eamon, the manager of Shoreline, for his assistance. ‘I found this tally extremely difficult to manage. One of the things that could be address is the negotiations with the returning officer every time there is a general election.
‘We couldn’t tally the initial 20 boxes correctly until they slowed down. I had to negotiate with the returning officer over the days. The lack of information was very frustrating for people in the public gallery.
‘Once the 13rd count results were announced on Sunday evening there were no more announcements until 10pm the following night.’ He said Joe Behan's votes and those of other candidates were counted and distributed without any announcement of eliminations. Cllr. Casey also thanked the tally volunteers for their work on the day.
Cllr. Pat Fitzgerald said ‘only for Cllr. Casey there was no leadership on the day.’
