‘Deplorable’ scenes as Roche eliminated, says John Byrne

Bray People - - COUNCIL REPORT -

‘ABSOLUTELY DEPLORABLE' carry on followed the elimination of former minister, Dick Roche, said Cllr. John Byrne at Monday's meeting of Wicklow County Council.

‘On the elimination of Dick Roche there was a lot of clapping and I think that was sad and I think a lot of people joined in. I think that's absolutely deplorable and it shouldn't have happened.'

However, Cllr. Byrne said the recount should not have been called. ‘ There was a recount but it shouldn't have been called. It was called because one candidate didn't want to be eliminated before his colleague and I don't know how much that cost.

‘We can give out about the returning officer but some public representa- tives at the county didn't always conduct themselves in a proper manner.'

Cllr. Pat Fitzgerald said when Dick Roche was eliminated, ‘I wasn't ecstatic. I didn't clap. I kept my hands in my pockets and kept my mouth shut. During the election I treated people with respect they deserve but I can't say I was treated with that.'

Dick Roche.
