There was a huge turnout at Coollattin for the ceremonial drive in of 2011 captains, Christy Doyle and Rena James.
The pair cut a dash as they chugged up the avenue of the big house on board a 1951 Vincent motorcycle and sidecar. Watched by a strange mixture of accomplished golfers and curious onlookers they launched their balls up the 17th fairway. One onlooker who has watched captains drive in over the past forty nine years never remembers a ball having been propelled so far. However, we feel that the member who said that it carried the club’s boundary fence and landed on top of Jone’s Stoops, may have been exaggerating.
The drive in was followed by an enjoyable nine hole scramble. This resulted in a maiden win for two members of the infamous Craanford society who like to label themselves the ‘Black Arrows’. Accompanied by Tom Wilkinson, Frank Darcy and Peter Doyle skipped around in a four under par 31.
With play completed, members adjourned to the warmth of the clubhouse.
Here there was a simple and moving memorial service for deceased members. Leading the prayers were Rev. Andrew Orr and Rev. Willie Byrne C.C.
The evening concluded with refreshments served by the club caterers (not to mention Dave Masterson and his bar staff).
