Gators back to winning ways
FOLLOWING THEIR cup exit the Wicklow Lady Gators returned to league action with a great away win against a strong Clondalkin side.
From the start the Gators meant business as Stacey Healy opened the scoring with a 15 feet shot which was followed by two slashing drives from Kristine Delahunt. The Gators smothering defence turned over the ball four more times and the Gators scored off the break with Siobhain Vickers, Patricia Delahunt, Patrice Franey and Rachel Kavanagh all knocking down big shots to give the Gators a lead of 19-2 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was similar as the first as the Gator defence really dominated with Yasmine Larkin, Christine Kavanagh and Siobhain Vickers out rebounded and out battled the Clondalkin girls.
Crucial baskets from Patrica Delahunt and Christine Kavanagh kept the Gators in control as the game got more physical and the referees were allowing things to go which contributed to some heavy hitting by both sides. But the Gators were sitting on a lead of 29-5 at the end of the first half.
As the Clondalkin side changed to a man to man defence the Gators still kept control, as they were unable to cope with the low post play of Kristine Delahunt who scored twice. Stacey Healy then forced another turnover and hit another 15 footer to increase the lead to 35-7.
This lead was reduced by Clondalkin who scored some nice baskets to reduce the lead to 35-15. A great offensive rebound by Patrice Franey who scored off the rebound finished out the quarter for the Gators leading comfortably.
Laura Hodginkson took over the final quarter for the Gators as she slashed to the basket several times for crucial baskets and together with looping hook shot from Yasmine Larkin the Gators ran out easy winners.
For the Gators it was the tough defensive play of their press which forced several turnovers which led to easy baskets. The only fault with the Gators is their poor offensive rebounding which will have to be addressed for next season, but they are still in the hunt for promotion, sitting third in the table and with some favourable results they could be promoted.
