Rathdrum ladies pip Garda in close encounter
RATHDRUM LADIES rugby team are back to league games in Division 3 having lost out in the semi-final of the Leinster Cup to a strong Clondalkin side. Rathdrum Ladies were defeated with a 17-5 score. Jessica Rowden got over the line for Rathdrum's only try of the day and Mo Dowling received player of the day for her efforts in the outhalf position.
Rathdrum are now back to fight for a place in the league with four games still to be played. Rathdrum were home at the Ivy League Grounds to host league table leaders Garda RFC who are undefeated so far in the League. Rathdrum had a tough job from the onset, Garda attacked from every angle with strong runners from the forward pack and the back line.
Garda pushed their way up the field in to Rathdrum's 22 but failed to make it over the line. Rathdrum's defensive line was held strong and on numerous occasions Garda were pushed back down into their own half. Rathdrum and Garda both put up a strong defensive team and both teams were evenly matched going into half-time with no scores to show.
In the second half Rathdrum had all to play for and on numerous occasions made it down into the Garda half. With ten minutes to go Rathdrum made it down the field and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts. Leanne Sullivan popped the ball over the posts. Garda fought back and went over the line but Rathdrum's forward pack held the ball up. The final score was Rathdrum 3, Garda 0. Player of the day was Stephanie Ward Windsor for her direction in the game, and whose strong attacking runs caused constant upset to the Garda side throughout the day.
The Rathdrum side also played last Sunday in a friendly against Gorey Under-18's side. Rathdrum's confidence was up after their win against Garda, however the Gorey girls stepped up to the plate and completely shook the home side throughout the day. Gorey displayed great rucking skills and Rathdrum were losing ball in each ruck. Rathdrum got down into the Gorey side and after ten minutes of play outhalf Mo Dowling fed the ball inside to Neasa Olohan who went over the line for the first try of the day. Following the kick-off, Rathdrum were back down into the Gorey side where off a line out, the ball was mauled over the line where Stephanie Ward Windsor went down for a try. Rathdrum 12-0.
Rathdrum were back down in the Gorey side again and with a ball passed out through the back line, saw a Gorey player intercept and she ran from her 22 up the field and under the posts for Gorey's first score. Half-time 12-7.
Rathdrum's frustrations were apparent at halftime and they needed to work together as a unit, however the young Gorey side didn’t allow Rathdrum any room to move. With ten minutes into the second half, Rathdrum were back in the Gorey side and with a robbed ball, the same Gorey player broke the defensive line and out ran the wingers and the full-back for Gorey's second try of the day. Score Gorey 14-12. Rathdrum were down players due to injuries and with a reshuffle in the back line.
With ten minutes to go, Rathdrum's forward pack drove Gorey back up the field and put AnnMarie Burke over the try line. Rathdrum were now down to twelve players on the field and with the last play Neasa Olohan got the ball out of the scrum down the back line to full back Pamela Maher who broke the Gorey side and sprinted in Rathdrum's final score. Final score - Rathdrum 24-14 Gorey.
