Arklow pay the penalty

Wayside Celtic 1, Arklow Town 1 (Wayside won 2-1 AET): After an action-packed Noel Ryan Cup semi-final encounter, it was Wayside Celtic who progressed to the final for the second year running after extra time.

Arklow Town started the game brightly with Gavin Doyle's lobbed effort after five minutes just falling the wrong side of the post with the goalkeeper beaten.

Greg Kilkenny then gave the Wicklow side the lead when he easily beat his marker before smashing the ball past the advancing shot-stopper.

Wayside drew level early into the second half. A powerful shot from the edge of the area was parried by keeper Coleman and the striker slotted into an empty net.

With the game drawing to a close Arklow were awarded a penalty when Carl Forsyth was fouled in the box by the Wayside keeper.

The keeper then made amends when he saved Billy Manley's spot kick to send the game into extra-time.

The hosts then poured more misery on Arklow when they snatched the winning goal in the first half of extra time; a superb volley by Wayside's number six beat the diving Coleman to spark scenes of wild celebration for the home side.

Arklow still have plenty to play for this season so they won't dwell too long on what might have been.
