Winning start for Donard
DONARD-GLEN got off to a winning start in Division 1 of the 2011 Senior Football League with a good but hard-earned win over Carnew at Donard on Friday night. Donard had home advantage but Carnew were never going to be a pushover after copper fastening their place in the top division just two weeks earlier. The home side set the pace from the start and took an early lead. Brian Lennon was in fine shooting form both from frees and play with Ray Halloran and Harry Mangan also chipping in with points. It was 0-5 to 0-3 in favour of Donard-Glen at half-time.
Carnew were not going to yield easily and brought on Willie Collins and Graham Keogh for the second half.
While Donard hit the first point of the second half the Carnew men came storming back with Joe Murphy cutting the deficit with two points and Brian Osborne, who had moved up field from his full-back position, getting a great point to bring the sides level. It was all to play for as the game entered the last quarter but a point by Ray Halloran and two from Brian Lennon sealed a good victory for the men of the West.
