Arklow ladies book place in DLTC final
THE ARKLOW Ladies 1 team will play their second Dublin Lawn Tennis Council Winter League Final in a row after coming through a close semi-final in Malahide last Sunday.
First Ladies, Kay Hickey and Irene Ryder, gave the team a great start with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-1 win but the teams were level after Malahide defeated the 2nd Ladies, Mags Kelly and Martina Behan, 6-4, 6-4.
In the deciding match Arklow's Jacinta Kinch and Lucia MacMahon came from behind to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and clinch a place in the Division 6 final on Sunday, March 27. The Mens team also had a great run in this year’s Winter League, winning their group in Division 7 and qualifying for the knockout stages for the first time, where they were narrowly defeated by Carrickmines.
In the clubs own Winter League finals on the 24th, Seamus Hickey and Hugh Kane will play Mike Nessbitt and Therese Nazari in Division 2, while in Division 1, Damien Whelan and Jacinta Kinch will play either Frank Dennehy and Mags Kelly or Dan Klimek and Lucia Mahon.
This year’s Daffodil Day Charity Tournament in aid of the Irish Cancer Society will be at 7.30 p.m. on the 25th March and is open to anyone who would like to help this worthy cause. Other upcoming events at Arklow Lawn Tennis Club include a St. Patricks Eve Tournament on Wednesday, March 16 at 7.15 p.m., and entries are now being taken for the Spring Team League commenc- ing on the 4th April.
Club Director of Junior Tennis, Mr. David Sheehan, continues the extensive Junior program with coaching on Saturdays and Tuesday and junior members will receive vouchers towards coaching when they join this year.
