WICKLOW ROVERS AFC
The first team entertained Bluebell Utd in the Whitegates on Saturday and they recorded a disappointing scoreless draw in a game they were hoping to collect three points in. The lads had the better of the chances throughout the game but failed to take the opportunities which came their way.
The second team took on Arklow Utd B in Ferndale Park in the third round of the Wicklow Cup on Sunday afternoon. After a tight encounter they progressed to the next round with a 2-1 win. Goals from Sean Tobin and Aidan O’Neill ensured their passage to the next stage of the competition.
Our third team continued their good league form with a 1-0 away victory against Carnew Celtic. Johnny O’Connor followed up his hat-trick last week with the only goal of the game to claim all three points.
The youths were due to play Dalkey Utd in the quarter finals of the cup on Saturday afternoon but it was called off when Dalkey couldn’t field a team.
The U-10 girls team lost 3-1 away to Cabinteely with Tess Haskins netting the Rovers goal.
The club would like to thank all the people who made the long journey to Tipperary recently to support the first team in their FAI Junior cup game against St. Michael’s FC, it was nice to see so many people there. The team management, players and club committee appreciated the support for the team so once again thank you all very much.
Don’t forget the big game this Saturday, the lads take on Sandyhill Celtic from Ballymun in the quarter finals of the Leinster Junior Cup, the match takes place in the Whitegates with the kick off at 2 o’clock.
It would be great to see a large crowd in the Whitegates to support the team so make your way down and cheer the lads on.
Our hat-trick heroes this week were Conor Lewins of the U-8C’s and Conor Hawes of the U-10C’s. Conor Lewins led the way when he hit the back of the net four times in his team’s 5-2 victory over Arklow Town C and he was followed closely by Conor Hawes who scored three goals for the 10C’s in their 6-0 win over Ardmore Rovers B, well done to you both.
With tomorrow being St. Patrick’s Day, the junior side of the club will be marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade so all our young players from U-8’s upwards are requested to meet at the clubhouse in the Whitegates at 2.30 pm. Any adults willing to help with the supervision of the kids in the parade would be welcomed and very much appreciated.
Also if the managers could be present it would be great, thanks.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to congratulate Amanda and Thomas Meade on the arrival of baby Conor. Hopefully older brother Aaron who plays on the clubs U-13A team will pass some of his football skills to his younger brother.
Our soccer academy is on every Saturday morning (weather permitting) in the Whitegates all-weather pitch at 11 o’clock, so for fun and games while learning the skills of the game come to the Whitegates from 11 till 12 under the guidance of experienced coach Johnny Dunne. The academy is open to boys and girls from the age of three upwards.

It was a busy weekend for the club, with all teams playing with a mix of results for all the different teams.
Senior men: Quarter-final Thomas Scott Cup: Carnew v Newtown Juniors 1-0: A great performance and a second half goal by Eugene Jordan saw Carnew take a place in the semi-final of the Thomas Scott Cup. The team performed brilliantly on the day but Michael Rock and Tomas Kinsella shone for the home team. Well done lads and best of luck in the next round
Under-15 Division 1 League: Ardmore Rovers 3, Carnew 9: The boys travelled to Ardmore on Saturday and proved why they are the league champions when they had an impressive win over Ardmore. Scorers on the day were Ger Lyons 2, Keith Farrell 2, Conall McCrea 1, Wayne Kinsella 1 and a hat trick by John Fleming.
Under-12 Division 1 Shield: Carnew 4, Aughrim 1: A great team performance was put in on the day by all and the boys remain undefeated, Scorers on the day were Cathal Doyle, Adam Doyle, Rhys Darcy Gaynor and Conor Mulholland. Under-10 Division 2 Shield St Pat's 1, Carnew 0: Unfortunately the under 10's lost the first Shield game but there is plenty of opportunity to catch back up in competition. A great game played by all but just didn't go their way on the day.
Under-9 Division 1 Shield: Carnew 1, Wolfe Tone 2: The under 9s were unlucky not to win or even draw on Saturday at home to Wolfe Tone. Conditions were wet and cold but the team still put up a good fight. Tom ' Tucker' Kinsella scored the home team's goal on the day.
Under-8: Wicklow Town 2, Carnew 6: The boys travelled to Wicklow on Sunday and took away their second win of the season. NEWTOWN JUNIORS F.C.
If there was a shortage of goals last weekend our teams more than made up for it this past weekend when our team's scored thirty one goals between them.
The Girl's under 14's take pride of place this week yet again after they qualified for the Leinster final after a 4-0 home win over Evergreen F.C. from Kilkenny. At half time the game was scoreless with the away side enjoying the best of the opening half. Newtown came out for the second half a different team and they pushed their opponents back on the backfoot from the very start.
Amy Murphy was starting to make inroads down the left flank and it was from one of her crosses that Newtown took the lead on 45 minutes when an Evergreen defender in trying to clear only succeeded in diverting the ball into her own net. Three minutes later it was 2-0 when Laura O'Neill finished from six yards after the keeper had parried a Murphy shot. 2-nil became 3-nil on 56 minutes when Cliona Crammond's free kick found the net via a big deflection. The scoring was completed on 64 minutes when Georgina Canavan headed home from close range after another pinpoint cross from Murphy. Best on the day for the team was Jane Fagan, Shelly Murphy, Rose Fagan and Amy Murphy. We will now play the final against either Shelbourne or St. Josephs and that final will take place sometime in April. Our under 13's girl's had a big 9-nil home win over Brookfield Celtic. Hat-tricks were scored by Niamh O'Brien and Amy Irwin while Hollie Murphy, Aine Gammall and Erynn O'Brien chipped in with a goal apiece. Best for the team were Lauren Nolan, Chelsee Snell and Orla Devlin. Two goals each for Ryan Smillie and Dylan Fitzsimons helped the under 8's to a 5-2 win over Enniskerry.
Josh Odlum scored the other goal while Darragh Dwyer and Katelyn Butler played well. The under 9's got their first win of their Shield campaign after a 6-0 home win over Greystones. James Crean led the way with 3 goals and the other scorers were Ciara Dease, Mark McHugh and Ciaran Keogh. The under 10's finally got some reward for recent displays with a 1-all draw away to Greystones. Conor Odlum scored the equaliser and Sean Byrne was unlucky not to win it with a scorching volley from 20 yards went narrowly wide. Best for the 10's were Lee Turner, Cian Walsh and Ryan Murphy. The under 12's secured the runners up spot in their league with a 1-all draw away to Enniskerry. Ryan Taylor scored from the penalty spot for the Newtown goal and the best players were Conor Doyle and Ryan Waters. The under 13's moved another step closer to the 13's league title with a 5-0 home win over St. Anthonys. Sean Dease and Keane Murphy scored two goals each while Darren Walsh scored the goal of the game with a long range shot from 25 yards. Best were Vova Ribakov and Evan Moran.
