Long looking for more strength in depth

MONDAY NIGHT'S disappointing exit from the Leinster Senior Cup brought Keith Long crashing back down to earth following Friday night's remarkable 2-3 victory over St. Patrick's Athletic.

Following the joys of Friday, Monday's realisation that the first team squad lack quality in depth proved a worry for the former Saint, who was delighted with debutant Conor Murphy's impact in Friday's win, which he felt was a deserved, if not rather odd victory.

'It was a strange game strange in a lot of ways', Long mused on Monday evening. 'I thought first half, we done reasonably well but we went in 1-0 down. Again, another sloppy goal conceded from a set-piece but I thought at half time we created probably the more clear-cut chances, yet we found ourselves 1-0 down.

'At the break, we asked the boys to be positive and then they come out and within two minutes they scored another goal from a setpiece.

'After that, we made a couple of changes and you like to think that your substitutes are going to make a bit of an impact and we brought Conor Murphy on and he got a goal and we got ourselves back in the game, got our tails up a little bit (and went on to win it).'

Murphy grabbed the headlines with his debut double, but it is exactly the kind of form Long hopes for from the former Hoop and he would like more the same now that the Seagulls are off the mark.

'He did very well. He's a good lad, he's an U19 international so you expect him to be of a reasonable standard but coming in off the bench and making his debut like that we're obviously delighted with him.

Murphy played the full 90 minutes of Monday's defeat to Pete Mahon's side but he struggled to have much an impact, as did the majority of his team-mates.

'It crystallizes what's wrong with the club. Again, we conceded from a set-piece. We had one or two performances that we're happy with tonight, one or two that we need to work on so in that respect we thought we had a little bit more quality in depth than tonight showed so maybe we have to revise that - based on tonight's performance.'
