St. Mary’s show brain power in Tráth na gCeist
THE ANNUAL Cumann na mBunscol Cill Mhantáin Tráth na gCeist took place in the Brockagh Centre in Laragh on Friday, 11ú Márta.
There were fifteen tables in total and the schools represented were St Mary’s Blessington, St. Brigid’s Greystones, Kilmacanogue, St. Cronan’s, Valleymount, Ashford, Kilcoole, Annacurra, Rathdrum, Baltinglass, Grangecon and Rathcoyle. Rathcoyle were going for their fifth title in a row, an impressive record!
Jim O’Riordán, Cathaoirleach welcomed everyone and proceedings got underway with Jim handing over to Jonathon Daniels who acted as MC on the night.
The quiz had eight rounds that included topics such as a picture round, all around Ireland, know your gaelic games, news and media, dingbats, all sports, county colours and gaelic games.
The standard was unbelievably high with many teams only getting a few questions incorrect. Undoubtedly knowl- edge of Gaelic games are of a very high standard in the Garden County.
After a tough battle St Mary’s Blessington (Joe Broderick, Seán McCrohan, Ellen Quinn and Jonathon Devoy) emerged as clear winners in first place.
An equal score resulted with four teams in second place. After two tie-breakers results were settled with Kilcoole Pri- mary School (Shane Creagh Nivelles, Stephen Hunt, Nathan Corkish and Brian Short) coming in second place and Rathcoyle (Bryan Kearney, Pádraig O’Toole, Colm Keogh and Steven Coogan) in third. Well done to all involved on a great night.
Peter Keogh spoke some wise words to all the teams while refreshments were passed out.
There were many spot prizes on the night and all teams left with something be it a gaelic football, sliotar, grip, signed hurley or Easter eggs to name a few.
The facilities in the Brockagh Centre most be commended as it is the perfect venue for the quiz so thanks to all involved. Also thanks must go to Jonathon Daniels who did a fine job at MC, for which we are very grateful. Well done to Seán Stakelum who put a lot of work into the quiz and its organisation. Also thanks to Dave Barry, Jim O’Riordan, Annmarie MacKenna, Claire Frawley and Pamela McDermott, who all helped out on the night.
