Chris and Nathan are youngest volunteers for Haiti aid mission

BRAY LADS Chris Carroll and Nathan Cardin are to be the two youngest volunteers on a team of 370 going to Haiti with the Haven Partnership.

Nathan (17) from Putland Villas, and Chris (16) from Ashfield Court are both in 5th year in St. Brendan's.

They will be helping to build houses in the Gonaïves area of Haiti and are in no way afraid of the hard work it will involve to get 60 houses built in a week.

They fly out on April 2, and on March 27 will undertake a sponsored walk from Shankill to Greystones and back to raise money for the country, devastated by the effects of a massive earthquake.

They were inspired to take on this challenge by Chris' dad Joe, who will be going out to Haiti for the second time. His friend PJ Morrissey will also be on the crew.

'I always wanted to do something like this,' said Nathan. 'I just didn't think it would be at such a young age.'

Both young men have paid a lot of attention to the reports Joe has brought back with him, and the shocking pictures he has shown them of the poverty in Haiti.

'I think it'll be a good experience,' said Chris, who explained that they both have experience in building and landscaping so will be well able for whatever work they are asked to do, including labouring and painting alongside the other members of the 370-strong team.

' We can't wait to go,' said Nathan, although both admitted that the 10-hour flight and 6-hour bus journey ahead is a little daunting.

As well as the sponsored walk, the duo and their family and friends will be arranging coffee mornings, church collections, an auction, and other fundraising activities to support the cause.

In the future, they both hope to continue to take on work to help victims of poverty or natural disasters all over the world. ' We are already planning on going to Japan, and actually want to go to as many places as possible,' they said.

Haven was set up on 2008 by Leslie and Carmel Buckley. It aims to help Haiti by building homes and creating jobs. 'Build It Week' involves volunteers each raising at least € 4,000, half of which goes towards flights and basic accommodation. The rest goes towards building supplies.
