Rath­new into semis

RATH­NEW AFC be­came the fi­nal side to qual­ify for the last four of the Jim McLaugh­lin Premier Tro­phy af­ter over­com­ing En­niskerry YC in their quar­ter-fi­nal clash with the help of a penalty shoot-out.

The Vil­lagers joined Su­gar­loaf FC, Wick­low Town A and de­fend­ing cham­pi­ons New­town United A in the penul­ti­mate round af­ter a 7-6 shoot-out vic­tory.

Af­ter 90 min­utes of ac­tion at Sham­rock Park last Wed­nes­day evening, the sides were locked at four goals apiece. A Jody Mer­ri­gan dou­ble and sin­gles from Paul Mer­ri­gan and An­thony Doyle for the hosts were can­celled out by ef­forts from Gavin Bar­ton, Justin Melia, Niall Vaughan and Alan King for En­niskerry.

Ex­tra-time proved in­de­ci­sive so it was time for the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

And af­ter six suc­cess­ful penal­ties, Ed­ward Doyle con­verted his spot-kick for Rath­new to make it ad­van­tage to the hosts. And when the vis­i­tors missed with their sev­enth at­tempt, Rath­new be­gan cel­e­brat­ing their semi-fi­nal spot.

An­thony Doyle, Mark Doyle, Nicky Mer­nagh, Jody Mer­ri­gan, Dean Franey and Colin Jame­son were also suc­cess­ful with their 12-yarders for Rath­new.
