Murder on TG4 docudrama
THE FINAL episode of a new TG4 docudrama series features an historical murder which took place in Baltinglass in January of 1924.
Midas Productions filed a re-enactment earlier this year of the murder of Garda Patrick O'Halloran by Felix McMullen in the exact same spot on the bridge on Main Street where it originally took place 87 years ago.
A number of locals contributed to the programme including local historian Paul Gorry and Tommy O'Connor, who was only a child at the time of the horrific murder which stunned the whole community.
On a quiet afternoon in January of 1924 a pair of ex-army captains just recently demobilised at the end of the Civil War arrived in Baltinglass by taxi. Only a month earlier they had been fighting to defend the state. Now they were intent on robbing a bank.
Amid the commotion over the ensuing bank raid, Garda Patrick O'Halloran was alerted. As he have chase to the two raiders as they attempted to escape, Felix McMullen ended up shooting him. Garda O'Halloran succumbed to his injuries the next day.
The Ceart agus Coir series explores six cases of execution by the Irish State.
Episode six features the story of the Baltinglass bank robbery and airs on Tuesday, May 10 at 10 p.m.. It's repeated on Monday, May 16 at 11.55 p.m..
