Mur­der on TG4 docu­d­rama

THE FI­NAL episode of a new TG4 docu­d­rama se­ries fea­tures an his­tor­i­cal mur­der which took place in Balt­in­glass in Jan­uary of 1924.

Mi­das Pro­duc­tions filed a re-en­act­ment ear­lier this year of the mur­der of Garda Pa­trick O'Halloran by Felix McMullen in the ex­act same spot on the bridge on Main Street where it orig­i­nally took place 87 years ago.

A num­ber of lo­cals con­trib­uted to the pro­gramme in­clud­ing lo­cal his­to­rian Paul Gorry and Tommy O'Con­nor, who was only a child at the time of the hor­rific mur­der which stunned the whole com­mu­nity.

On a quiet af­ter­noon in Jan­uary of 1924 a pair of ex-army cap­tains just re­cently de­mo­bilised at the end of the Civil War ar­rived in Balt­in­glass by taxi. Only a month ear­lier they had been fight­ing to de­fend the state. Now they were in­tent on rob­bing a bank.

Amid the com­mo­tion over the en­su­ing bank raid, Garda Pa­trick O'Halloran was alerted. As he have chase to the two raiders as they at­tempted to es­cape, Felix McMullen ended up shoot­ing him. Garda O'Halloran suc­cumbed to his in­juries the next day.

Episode six fea­tures the story of the Balt­in­glass bank rob­bery and airs on Tues­day, May 10 at 10 p.m.. It's re­peated on Mon­day, May 16 at 11.55 p.m..
